Dr Barnard is recognized internationally for developing biological nutrient removal process. He introduced biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus to North America with the design of BNR plants for Palmetto FL and Kelowna B.C. in the seventies.

He graduated in Civil Engineering from the Universities of Stellenbosch in South Africa, the University of Texas at Austin and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. He is presently a Global Practice and Technology Leader with Black & Veatch in Kansas City. He is a winner of the WEF Thomas R Camp Medal for the development of innovative processes and was the first recipient of the Koch/Imhoff Award from the International Water Association, Gold Medal from the South African Academy of Science and Arts and the 2007 Clarke Award. He was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Johannesburg.

He is active in WERF and WEF Committees and review papers for the Water Research Journal. He presents courses and seminars on BNR at various universities and Institutions in many countries. He is presently serving or served on the Technical Advisory Committee for the City of New York, City of Winnipeg MB, and Washington DCWASA and for the City of Los Angeles.

With his global expertise, Dr. Barnard’s vision of the future of wastewater treatment is unique and will be an interesting subject of his breakfast speech.
