W213 Biofilm Reactors: Application to Today's Global Wastewater Challenges
This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of biofilm reactor technologies and their application globally. Basic biological principles important to understanding the application of biofilm reactors will be presented along with detailed design concepts for specific technologies, including trickling filters, moving bed biofilm reactors, integrated fixed-film activated sludge reactors, aerobic biofilters, and denitrification filters. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the information by conceptually solving several real-world problems in breakout sessions. As a result of attending the workshop, participants will understand:
Fundamentals of biofilm reactor technology and how to apply unifying concepts to all biofilm reactor types
Advantages and disadvantages of biofilm reactors compared to conventional processes
Basic design approaches and design criteria for biofilm technologies
Impact of up- and downstream unit processes on system performance
How simulation models can be used in design practice
