W204 Reducing Your Carbon Footprint and Saving Energy Through System-Wide Optimization

Track: GIS & Computer Applications, Instrumentation & Automation ; Sustainability/Energy Conservation/International Issues
When: Sunday, October 11, 2009, 8:30am - 5:00pm
Where: Orange County Convention Center, Room 307A, Level 3
This workshop will examine how system-wide optimization and automation can be used to cost-effectively reduce both overall human impact on the environment and energy costs at wastewater treatment plants. The program will emphasize “smart” operation and the retrofit of existing equipment. Attendees will learn:
  • A holistic approach to process optimization and automation, with a goal of minimizing operational costs and carbon footprint at the same time
  • Application of computer modeling, including commercially available process models, to the selection of process control and energy management strategies

Case studies will demonstrate the practical details of implementing measures leading to carbon footprint reduction. Facilitated discussion sessions, reflecting attendee priorities, will explore optimization and automatic control of specific systems and unit processes such as pumping, liquid and solids treatment systems, or cogeneration.
