W202 Membrane Bioreactor Life-Cycle Cost Assessment Simulation: Digital Game-Based Learning

Track: Membrane Technologies ; Facility Operations
When: Sunday, October 11, 2009, 8:30am - 5:00pm
Where: Orange County Convention Center, Room 308A, Level 3
This workshop, through digital game-based simulation and learning, will challenge participants to plan, design, and operate a membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant while facing the real-life uncertainties existing in today’s economic climate. Working on diverse teams, each charged with minimizing the life-cycle cost of their MBR plant, attendees will experience an innovative and fun learning approach. The realistic game environment incorporates not only engineering and economic developments of MBR systems, but also stochastic aspects that influence life-cycle costs. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have an enhanced understanding of:
  • Biological and chemical nutrient removal systems
  • MBR treatment systems and operating strategies
  • Finance options and alternatives for these systems
  • Cap-and-trade emissions markets for nutrients and carbon dioxide
  • The interrelation of factors determining the most cost-effective MBR nutrient removal systems

Special Notes:
1. This is an advanced workshop for those with a good background in wastewater treatment processes and who are involved with the operation, design, planning, or research and development of MBR systems. See www.weftec.org for the rules of the game.
2. Attendance is limited to the first 100 registrants.
