W103 Treatment Plant Planning and Design: Sustainability Considerations

Track: Sustainability/Energy Conservation/International Issues ; Facility Operations
When: Saturday, October 10, 2009, 8:30am - 5:00pm
Where: Orange County Convention Center, Room 311A, Level 3
This workshop will cover the key sustainability issues that influence decisions made during treatment plant planning and design and will focus on practical tools that can be used to compare overall environmental performance of alternative treatment schemes. The approaches covered can help address the challenge of providing the complex treatment processes required to meet increasingly stringent effluent limits while considering carbon footprint concerns. Targeted for planners, designers, utility professionals, regulators, academics, and others, the workshop incorporates use of life-cycle analysis (LCA) for comparing candidate treatment schemes to maximize net environmental benefit. During breakout-group sessions, participants will review, evaluate, critique, and learn from the LCA approaches applied in Australia and Denmark as presented by experts from these countries.
